Does using AAC stop a child from talking?
This is the question almost every parent asks first, and the worry behind it is entirely reasonable. The research answer has been consistent for more than twenty years, and it is not the one most people expect.
No. Introducing AAC does not prevent or delay speech. Across the published research the effect on speech production is neutral to positive — most studies that measure it find gains, not losses — and no study has found that AAC suppressed speech development.
What the research found
The concern was studied directly, and repeatedly, because clinicians kept meeting it:
- A systematic review by Millar, Light and Schlosser (2006) examined studies of AAC intervention and speech production. The large majority of participants showed gains in speech; none showed a decrease attributable to AAC.
- Schlosser and Wendt (2008) reviewed AAC intervention with children with autism and reached the same conclusion — no evidence of speech being inhibited, with modest gains common.
- Romski and Sevcik's work on augmented language input found that children given AAC alongside spoken language made greater gains in spoken vocabulary than those given spoken language alone.
Different populations, different methods, the same direction of result. This is about as settled as questions in this field get.
Why it works that way
Speech is hard. Communication is the goal, and speech is only one route to it. When someone finally has a route that works, several things follow at once: the pressure comes off, communication attempts go up, and every attempt is now paired with a spoken model — the device says the word, an adult repeats it, and the person hears the target while succeeding at the message. AAC also makes the point of language obvious. Someone who has never successfully asked for anything has very little reason to practise asking.
Is my child too young?
There is no minimum age and no list of prerequisite skills. The old idea that a child must first demonstrate cause and effect, or reach a certain mental age, or show “readiness”, has been abandoned — it kept the children who needed communication most waiting the longest. Toddlers use AAC successfully. If a child is old enough to want something, they are old enough to have a way to ask for it.
Is my child too old?
No. AAC is introduced successfully to teenagers and adults, including people who used speech and lost it after a stroke, an injury, or a progressive condition. What changes with age is the vocabulary and the way the system looks — not whether it can work.
What to do about it
- Start now. You do not need an evaluation to let someone try a free app. Waiting has a cost; trying does not.
- Model without demanding. Tap words as you talk, and do not require the device to be used before granting a request.
- Keep speech welcome. AAC does not replace whatever speech someone has — accept every word, sound, sign and gesture. It is all communication.
